Writely is an online word processing service that behaves similarly to Microsoft Word or Open Office Document Writer, and let’s you save your work in myriad ways (online, your desktop, an ftp, to name a few).

Unfortunately new users can’t sign up yet, and that mean me. They offer to email you when they begin to allow new users; I am awaiting one.

If wordprocessing can be effectively moved online, online emails services are ubiquitous, and streaming media is already the norm, what then does the average PC owner need with an operating system other than it being a platform to run a web browser? I think that answer may turn out to be, “nothing”.
