It’s come to my attention that there are a ton of job postings out there that stringently list qualifying tools and languages that a developer must have a working knowledge of to even be considered. This. Is retarded.

And unfortunately, someome, somewhere thinks that this is what’s important in a developer. Well let’s just clear this up right now then. That is absolute, total, utter and complete bullshit, and here is why:

These languages and tools, they are not static. People who typically claim to be an expert in a tool have probably been using it a little too long, and probably can’t adapt into another environment. Any developer worth his weight in sand should be able to accomplish any task (within reason) using any language, equipped merely with some documentation and examples. To that end, if a developer is like an artist, his language is less like his medium but more like a color pallet. What kind of idiot would hire someone because they are an expert in blue?
